Casting Call

Before getting Caleb’s cast put on he needs to get an MRI. This will help determine if there any underlying issues that are contributing or causing the scoliosis. Caleb’s case is considered idiopathic which means there is no known cause. It could have happened in utero or after birth. Looking back at his baby pictures there are some things to indicate he probably had it for a while but scoliosis is not one of those things on your radar with a new child or something pediatricians look for at such a young age.

If you notice in this picture, looking at the right shoulder it sits lower than the left. Uneven shoulders are a sign of scoliosis. He is about 6 months old here.

Back to the MRI, that was the first real reality check for us of what was to come. I new Caleb would be sedated but I didn't really think it through. When we got there and were taken back to a room they were getting ready to put an IV in him. I was not mentally prepared for that. It was hard to watch. Hard to watch your child scream and cry because they could not get the IV in the veins in his cute little arm so finally they tried his chubby leg and had success. You want nothing more than to switch places with your child and spare them the pain but you can't so the next best thing to do is hold them, snuggle them, love them and give them and give them all the ice cream they want.
