The Trouble With The Curve

Once we received the diagnosis we were told to set up an appointment with a pediatric orthopedist asap. Infantile Scoliosis or Early Onset Scoliosis if not treated and treated soon can be potentially life threatening. I said in an earlier post that 90% of these cases resolve on their own. The way this is determined by rib rotation. If there is rib rotation and it is over 20 degrees it is a strong indicator that it is progressive and the spine will only continue to curve. A person has the most rapid growth periods in the first 2 years of life. So if left untreated as Caleb grows the curve will too. This could eventually compromise his cardiopulmonary function because the rib cage is twisting and not allowing enough room for the heart and lungs to develop properly. Because we have caught it early it gives Caleb a greater chance of avoiding surgery when he is older.
